STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

July 19, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was saddened to learn today of the death of the former President of the Fédération des travailleurs du Québec, Louis Laberge:

"I was saddened to learn of the death of Louis Laberge, a man who marked the history of the union movement in Quebec and Canada. Throughout the years, I have had the chance of knowing him personally and of working with him on many occasions.

Since he began with Section 712 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Mr. Laberge always defended the interests of workers in Quebec with dedication, imagination and efficiency. During his thirty years as head of the FTQ, he took part in many significant social and political battles. Mr. Laberge will be fondly remembered for his tremendous contributions which advanced both the cause and the rights of workers.

Aline joins me in offering our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Laberge’s family, colleagues and many friends."
