Senate appointments bring number of women in Upper Chamber to historic high

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that his Excellency
the Governor General has agreed to summon Doris M. Anderson of
Prince Edward Island, Lorna Milne of Ontario, Marie-Paule Poulin
of Ontario, and the Honourable William Rompkey of Newfoundland
to the Senate of Canada.
Today's appointments bring the number of women senators to 23,
the highest ever in the history of the Senate. Eight of the 12
Senate appointments announced since this government took office
have been women, a proportion of two-thirds.
The appointments are effective immediately.
