UN Secretary-General to visit Canada

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Secretary-General of the United Nations, will pay an official visit to Canada, November 21-23.

"We are happy to host the Secretary-General in Canada during this 50th anniversary year of the United Nations. We look forward to re-confirming our strong commitment to the organization and to discussing means to strengthen it to meet the challenges of the 21st century," said Mr. Chrétien.

While in Ottawa, Mr. Boutros-Ghali will meet with Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, Prime Minister Chrétien and other members of the Cabinet, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, André Ouellet.

The Secretary-General will present a public lecture to be followed by a fund-raising gala hosted by the United Nations Association of Canada to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. He is also to receive an honorary degree (Doctor of Laws) from Carleton University.
