Prime Minister pays tribute to the late Robertson Davies

December 4, 1995
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today paid tribute to the late Robertson Davies.

"With the death of Robertson Davies, Canadians have lost a man of extraordinary talent, whose highly acclaimed work has earned him a place among the giants of literature. His writing was always full of wit and intelligence, and bespoke a man whose keen eye, imagination, and sense of humour were boundless. His work helped define not only Canadian literature, but world literature in the 20th century. We will always be grateful for the joy he brought us.

Even though Canada will be much the poorer with the passing of Robertson Davies, his spirit will continue to live on in his work, enriching generation after generation of Canadians."

The Prime Minister and Madame Chrétien offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Robertson Davies.
