Shirley Maheu is appointed to the Senate

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien Announced today that his Excellency
the Governor General has agreed to summon Shirley Maheu of Quebec
to the Senate of Canada.
The appointment is effective immediately.

Shirley Maheu
Shirley Maheu was born in Montreal in 1931. She has served as
the Member for Parliament for the riding of Saint-Laurent--Cartierville
since 1988. She was appointed Deputy Chairperson of Committees
of the Whole House in 1994 and, among other duties, presided over
debates in the House of Commons. She also served as Vice-Chair
of the Standing Committee on Multiculturalism and Citizenship
and Chair of the Quebec Caucus from 1993 to 1994. Mrs. Maheu was
appointed Official Opposition Critic for Multiculturalism and
Citizenship and Whip for Quebec in 1990.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, Mrs. Maheu was a municipal
councillor for the City of Saint-Laurent. She also served as honourary
president of the Red Cross Society, Saint-Laurent section, and
was a member of several organizations including the Insurance
Brokers' Association of Quebec, The Chamber of Commerce of Saint-Laurent,
the Carrefour Multi-Ethnique de Saint-Laurent and the Fondation
du Centre hospitalier de Saint-Laurent. She graduated from O'Sullivan
Business College.
Mrs. Maheu is married to René Maheu. They have four sons.
