Prime Minister announces appointment of Roy MacLaren as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of the Honourable Roy MacLaren as the High Commissioner for Canada
to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, effective
July 1, 1996.
"Roy MacLaren has had extensive experience in international
trade and finance in both the public and private sectors. He also
had a long career representing Canada in the foreign service,"
said the Prime Minister. "His impressive credentials will
serve Canada's interests very well in the United Kingdom."
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to outgoing High Commissioner
Royce Frith. "Mr. Frith has done an outstanding job in London,
and was particularly effective during the 'Turbot War' in helping
to rally British public opinion on Canada's behalf."
Until his appointment takes effect, Mr. MacLaren will serve as
an adviser to the Prime Minister on international trade. He will
not be drawing his parliamentary pension in either position.
Roy MacLaren has served in a number of cabinet portfolios, including
Minister of National Revenue, Minister of State (Finance), and
most recently, Minister of International Trade. Before entering
Parliament he was Publisher of Canadian Business Magazine, Vice-President
of Massey-Ferguson, and President of Ogilvy & Mather. From
1957 to 1969, Mr. MacLaren served in the Canadian foreign service,
and held postings in Hanoi, Prague, Geneva and New York.
