Chair of Canadian Race Relations Foundation appointed

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander as Chairman of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.

Mr. Alexander was Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991. He was elected to the House of Commons from 1968 to 1980 and was appointed as Minister of Labour in 1979.

After resigning from the House of Commons in 1980, he was appointed Chairman of the Workers' Compensation Board. Mr. Alexander is Chancellor of the University of Guelph. He is the recipient of many awards and honours, including Man of the Year by the Ethnic Press Council in 1982, and the Caribana Cultural Community Achievement Award in 1984. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Alexander is a Companion of the Order of Canada and a Member of the Order of Ontario.

The newly-established Foundation will be a Centre of Excellence, sharing and applying knowledge and expertise to combat racism and all forms of racial discrimination in Canada. It will also be a source of information for the public and a resource for federal government policy and program development.
