Japan's Prime Minister to Make First Official Visit to Canada

November 20, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Japan's Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto will make an official visit to Ottawa November 26-27, following the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Vancouver.

"This will be Mr. Hashimoto's first official visit to Canada as Prime Minister of Japan, and the first visit by a Japanese Prime Minister since 1989," said the Prime Minister. "It will be an excellent opportunity to follow through on our mutual commitment to building closer relations. Prime Minister Hashimoto's visit is also a high point of Canada's Year of Asia Pacific."

The leaders will discuss progress on commitments agreed to last year in the Canada-Japan Agenda for Cooperation. Prime Minister Hashimoto will also call on the Governor General of Canada, Mr. Roméo LeBlanc.

Japan is Canada's second largest trading partner, as well as a key source of both direct and portfolio investment. It is also a key partner in Asia Pacific, and such international fora as the G-7, the UN, and APEC.
