Prime Minister Witnesses Signings in Slovenia

May 17, 1998
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today witnessed the signing of two agreements with the Republic of Slovenia:

  • An Agreement on Social Security will enable former residents of Slovenia, who now reside in Canada, to receive their Slovene pensions. Canadians who wish to return to Slovenia would be able to collect pro-rated Canadian pensions in Slovenia through this agreement.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Military Relations will provide for the training of Slovenian military and civilian personnel under Canada's Military Training Assistance Program. Slovenian military personnel will be offered training in areas such as: democratic civil-military relations, defence resources management and language training.
  • "Canada commends Slovenia for the way it has built a stable democracy and modern market economy since it achieved independence in 1991," the Prime Minister said. "The signing of these two agreements are evidence of Canada's continued support and encouragement and a reflection of the vitality of our relations."

The Prime Minister witnessed the signings of these agreements with Slovene Prime Minister Drnovsek while making an official visit to Slovenia. This visit is part of Prime Minister Chrétien's official visit to Europe. Tomorrow he will visit Canadian troops in Bosnia, and then travel to Italy until May 23.
