Prime Minister Expresses Government of Canada's Support for Toronto Hosting the 2008 Olympic Games

November 3, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien today expressed his full support for Toronto hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. In a meeting with Premier Mike Harris of Ontario, the Prime Minister confirmed that the Government of Canada looks forward to defining how it can be of greatest assistance in support of the Toronto bid in the weeks to come.

"Toronto is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the world and is Canada's choice to host the Games," said the Prime Minister. "I have every confidence in the people of Toronto's ability to put forward a strong bid which will enjoy broad-based community support."

The Prime Minister noted that Canada has already earned an undisputed reputation as host of Olympic events, having successfully hosted the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary. "Staging the 2008 Olympic in Toronto would result in significant sport, cultural, social and economic benefits for Canada, not the least of which is the opportunity to showcase Toronto and Canada on the world stage."

The International Olympic Committee will announce the host city for the 2008 Games in the summer of 2001.
