STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

December 5, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

"It was fourteen years ago that fourteen women were killed in a hateful act of violence at the École polytechnique de Montréal. The lives of brilliant young women came to a horrifying end, and so too ended the ignorance of many Canadians about the extent and impact of violence against women. Today we mark that unforgettable, brutal afternoon with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Canadians share a vision for a society of tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and opportunity in which all of us are able to work toward making our dreams for ourselves and our families come true. We must each take responsibility for building a nation where no one lives in fear because of their gender and where all can live freely – and participate fully – in society.

When we remember and mourn the fourteen women whose lives were so brutally ended on December 6, 1989, we make a pledge toward making Canada a safe and peaceful society and putting an end to all violence against women."
