The passing of the Honourable Mitchell Sharp

March 19, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of the Honourable Mitchell Sharp.

More than anyone, Mr. Sharp was the symbol of a life spent serving his fellow citizens. As a public servant, minister of several departments and advisor to Prime Ministers, Mr. Sharp spent his long career working to improve Canadians’ quality of life.

Those who were fortunate enough to work with him will remember him for his boundless energy, for his enduring courtesy, as well as for his determination and great wisdom.

His long experience in the public service also gave him extensive knowledge of the machinery of government, serving as a valued advisor to friends and colleagues when he was elected in 1963 and subsequently as a minister in a number of very senior positions.

I know that my father, who was his fellow minister for a number of years, considered him as a valued colleague, and above all, as a friend.

On behalf of all Canadians, I express my sincere condolences to his family. He served his country as few have, and his country is very grateful.
