Canada’s New Government Consults Canadians on Democratic Reform

OTTAWA – The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform today announced that the Government is planning to organize public consultations on Canada’s democratic institutions and practices.

"As stated in the Speech from the Throne, Canada's New Government is committed to Canadians having a say in the renewal of our democratic institutions," Minister Van Loan said. "These consultations will give Canadians a voice on strengthening and modernizing our democracy."

The national public consultations will consist of 12 citizens’ forums which will take place this winter. One forum will be held in each province, one forum will be held in the territories, and there will be one national youth forum. The participants will be representative of the general population.

Canadians will be asked to provide their views on a wide range of areas, including:

  • political parties;
  • the electoral system;
  • the House of Commons;
  • the Senate; and
  • the role of the citizen.

“Canada’s New Government will fulfill its commitment, outlined in the Speech from the Throne, to involve citizens in examining the challenges facing Canada’s democratic institutions and practices,” added Minister Van Loan. “I look forward to hearing the voices of Canadians as we continue to deliver on the Government’s democratic reform agenda.”
