Hon. Senator Nancy Ruth to join Conservative Senate caucus

OTTAWA –The Honourable Marjory LeBreton, P.C., Leader of the Government in
the Senate is pleased to announce that the Honourable Senator Nancy Ruth will be
joining the Conservative caucus in the Senate.
Since her appointment to the Senate in March 2005, Senator Nancy Ruth has sat
as a Progressive Conservative. Senator Nancy Ruth represents the city of
Toronto, Ontario in the Senate of Canada.
Prior to being summoned to the Senate, Senator Nancy Ruth worked extensively
on issues of women’s rights, poverty, economics and education. She has
co-founded several organizations which promote women’s issues, including the
Women's Legal Education and Action Fund, the Canadian Women’s Foundation,
Toronto’s The Linden School, and the Charter of Rights Coalition. In
recognition of her philanthropy and social activism, Senator Nancy Ruth was
named as a member of the Order of Canada in 1994.

Nancy Ruth, C.M.

A United Church Minister by training and an activist by choice, Nancy Ruth is
a leading advocate of the incorporation of Canada’s constitutional equality
rights into our public policy and institutions. She co-founded, and served as a
director and officer of organizations devoted to achieving full civil, legal,
economic, political and cultural rights for women and girls in all their
diversity, including:
With a focus on poverty, violence, health, peace and the environment, Nancy
Ruth has served on the Board of Directors of the Economic Council of Canada, the
Canadian Centre for Arms Control, the Canada-USA Fulbright Foundation, The
Doctor’s Hospital Foundation and the International Institute of Concern for
Public Health.
As a business woman she has been involved with land development and
environmental products. As a politician she ran in Ontario for the Progressive
Conservatives in 1990 and 1993 and was appointed to the Senate in 2005. In 1993
she represented Canada at the UN elections in Cambodia.
Nancy Ruth’s contributions to social change have been recognized nationally
and internationally. She has been awarded the Order of Canada (1994), the
Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Person’s Case (1997), the
Government of Ontario’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Human Rights
(1998), the Toronto YWCA Women of Distinction Award (1988), the Hero Award,
Metropolitan Community Church, Toronto (2000), Simone de Beauvoir Institute
Fellowship, Concordia University, Montreal, (1991) and the South African Women
for Women Friendship Award (2004). She holds honourary degrees from York, Trent,
Laurentian and Mount St. Vincent Universities.
