Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Canada has agreed to the appointment of General John de Chastelain to the international body which is overseeing the decommissioning of arms in Northern Ireland.

The formation of the group was announced this week by Prime Minister Major and Taoiseach Bruton as part of a new formula to move the peace process in Northern Ireland forward.

"All Canadians should be proud that one of our own has been selected for this important task," said Prime Minister Chrétien. "I am confident that General de Chastelain will make a significant contribution to the vital peace process in Northern Ireland."

General de Chastelain will continue as Chief of the Defence Staff until the conclusion of his tour of duty.
