Canadian Representation at Inauguration of South African President

June 11, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray will be his personal representative at the inauguration of Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's new President, on June 16.

"Although the South Africa's post-apartheid history is short, these elections demonstrate the determination of all South Africans to uphold democratic values. We congratulate Mr. Mbeki on the vote of confidence which he has received," said the Prime Minister. "The holding of these elections, and the results, are a fitting tribute to the role which President Mandela played in the transformation of South African society. He has established a fine legacy of peace and reconciliation for his country, one which will be ably carried forward by the new President."

The Prime Minister added that Canada stands ready to assist Mr. Mbeki as he and his people face the continuing challenges of nation-building.

Deputy Prime Minister Gray will be in South Africa June 14-18.
