The Government of Canada Helps the Municipality of Shannon

Québec, February 13, 2009 – Minister Josée Verner announced today that the Government of Canada is committed to helping the Municipality of Shannon to complete the extension of its municipal network and water supply.

"The improvement of the Municipality of Shannon’s drinking water system was a priority for our government. That is why I have been working closely with the municipality and other key stakeholders to find a solution," said the President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie, the Honourable Josée Verner. "Today, I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada plans to provide a $13,345,000 grant to the Municipality of Shannon to help them complete the water supply system, which will improve its residents' quality of life."

The Minister of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec), the Honourable Denis Lebel, added that this is another tangible example of what the Government is doing to help Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

"Our government is listening to the concerns of Canadians throughout the country," Minister Lebel added. "In these unstable economic times, we are working hard to deliver results that will ensure a better future for us all."

In addition, to fast-track federal approval on this file, the Government of Canada is working with the Province of Quebec to obtain the necessary approval under the Act respecting the Conseil exécutif (L.R.Q. c. M-30), in order to deliver the funding to the municipality as soon as possible.
