March 6, 2001 - New
$750 Million Investment in the Canada Foundation for Innovation - This new
investment will allow the CFI to extend its research infrastructure funding
programs until 2010, providing the stability that universities and research
institutions need to make further progress in planning their research
priorities.
June 2000 - The
Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation - The Foundation was created to
grant awards to students who are in financial need and demonstrate merit. By January 2001, the Foundation
had delivered bursaries to over 75,000 students.
February 2000 - Research
Chairs - In Budget 2000, the Government of Canada committed $900 million
to support the establishment of 2,000 new research chairs in Canadian
universities by March 31, 2005.
February 2000 - Genome
Canada - Budget 2000 provided a $160-million grant to Genome Canada, a
not-for-profit corporation that will deliver a Canada-wide partnership-based
genomics enterprise. The Government of Canada has committed an additionnal
$140 million, bringing its total financial support thus far to $300 million.
March, 2001 - Major Accomplishment: the delivery of the 250,000th computer to schools - The Government of Canada, through the Computers for School (CFS) program, provides Canada's schools and libraries with surplus computers and software donated by governments and the private sector. In this way, surplus computers become a valuable resource for increasing children and youth's access to computer technology in a learning environment.
