STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

October 2, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chretien issued this statement today on the news that two Canadian soldiers were killed and three wounded when their vehicle struck an explosive device in Afghanistan:

"I was deeply saddened to learn that brave Canadian soldiers had been killed and wounded in the line of duty in Afghanistan. Canada has, resolutely and without hesitation, joined all civilized nations in the international war on terrorism. The news today is a painful reminder that defending our values and doing our duty can come with a very high price.

Of course the hearts and minds of all Canadians will first and foremost be with the families whose loved ones were involved. No amount of preparation can ever cushion such awful blows. And while it can be of little consolation at this terrible hour, they must know that they are not alone in their grief. That a proud nation will never forget the sacrifices these soldiers have made, soldiers who are on the front lines in the war against terrorism.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies for the lost and our abiding prayers for the full recovery of the wounded."
