PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN MINISTERIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced changes in ministerial responsibility.

The Minister of Industry, the Honourable Allan Rock, will assume responsibility for the government’s strategic infrastructure funds. The Minister will be supported in that regard by a new Office of Infrastructure of Canada.

The Minister of Transport, the Honourable David Collenette, has been assigned responsibility for five Crown corporations: the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Canada Post Corporation, the Royal Canadian Mint, the Canada Lands Company Limited and the Queens Quay West Land Corporation. Mr. Steve Mahoney, previously Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, has been appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Crown Corporations to assist the Minister of Transport in carrying out his new responsibilities.

As announced on June 2, 2002, the President of the Treasury Board, the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, will be responsible for Crown corporations policy.

The Minister of Public Works and Government Services, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, will assume responsibility for the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution. Minister Goodale is currently Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. This appointment takes advantage of his experience and understanding of Aboriginal issues.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable John Manley, will retain responsibility for border issues, and will continue to chair the Ad Hoc Committee of Ministers on Public Security and Anti-Terrorism.
