PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHIEF OF STAFF

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien is pleased to announce the appointment of Edward S. Goldenberg as Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister.

Trained as a lawyer, Mr. Goldenberg has extensive experience in the federal public service. He has served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister since 1993. This appointment is effective immediately.

Mr. Goldenberg replaces Percy Downe. The Prime Minister took the opportunity to pay tribute to Mr. Downe for his excellent service. "Percy's help has been invaluable to me over the past two years as well as during his tenure as Director of Appointments. His wise counsel contributed to the many successes of our government, and I am very grateful to him."
