Prime Minister announces appointment of Kim Campbell as Consul General to Los Angeles

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Right Honourable Kim Campbell of Vancouver as Canada's Consul General in Los Angeles.

Kim Campbell was born in Port Alberni, British Columbia, on March 10, 1947. Before serving as Prime Minister, she also served as Minister of State (Indian Affairs and Northern Development), Minister of Justice, and Minister of National Defence and Veterans Affairs. Prior to being elected to the House of Commons from the riding of Vancouver Centre in 1988, she was an MLA in the British Columbia Legislative Assembly and Chairman of the Vancouver School Board.

A lawyer, Ms. Campbell obtained her law degree at the University of British Columbia. She also studied political science at the University of British Columbia, and Soviet studies at the London School of Economics.

Ms. Campbell spent 1994 as a Fellow at the Institute of Politics and the Joan Shorenstein Center on Press and Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Since leaving office, Ms. Campbell has spoken in Canada, the United States and Europe on issues related to international politics, Canadian unity, Canadian-American relations, public law, and women in politics and society. A member of the Committee to Visit the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, she was named Regents' Lecturer at the University of California, Irvine, in February 1996.

The appointment is effective as of September 16, 1996.
