Prime Minister appoints Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Jean-Louis Roux as Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec.

Mr. Roux is one of Quebec's most distinguished cultural figures. Born in Montreal on May 18, 1923, he has been a leading actor, director and writer on the stage and in film and television. He was director general of the National Theatre School of Canada from 1982 to 1987, and was formerly co-founder and artistic director of the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal.

Mr. Roux was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1972, a Member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1982, and Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec in 1989.

Mr. Roux was appointed to the Senate in August 1994. He resigned from the Senate today.
