Canadian members of APEC Business Advisory Council Announced

Fulfilling the decision by Leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in November 1995, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today named the Canadian members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), a permanent private-sector advisory body created to give Leaders business perspectives on how to sustain growth and expand trade in the region. The Canadian representatives to the ABAC are:

Dr. Dorothy Riddle, CMC, President and CEO of Service-Growth Consultants, a financial services company active in Asia. Dr. Riddle will chair the Canadian ABAC delegation in 1996.

Mr. Timothy Reid, President, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Pacific Business Forum, the precursor to the ABAC.

Mr. Terry Hui, President and CEO, Concord Pacific Developments Corporation.

The ABAC will be the primary vehicle for ensuring that business plays a leading role in shaping APEC's evolution as a forum for trade and investment liberalization. The ABAC brings together representatives of both big business and small- and medium-sized enterprises from all APEC economies. At the first meeting in Manila, Canada was named co-chair of the ABAC for 1996, and chair for 1997, coinciding with Canada's chairing of the overall APEC process next year. Canada's ABAC members will have a key role in channelling private-sector policy advice to the Prime Minister when he hosts the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Vancouver in November 1997.

I am committed to ensuring that APEC continues to respond to the needs and concerns of Canadian business, and I am especially pleased to welcome our ABAC members to the team as we prepare to bring the Asia Pacific world to Canada in 1997," said the Prime Minister.

APEC has 18 member economies: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Thailand, and United States.

Dorothy Riddle, Ph.D., CMC
President and CEO, Service-Growth Consultants Inc. (Canada)

Serving as chair of the Canadian ABAC team, Dorothy Riddle specializes in enhancing the performance of service delivery systems, both public and private. She is an international expert in services and economic development, having designed the methodology used by the United Nations in conducting competitive assessments of the service sector. Author of Service-Led Growth: The Role of the Service Sector in World Development, Dr. Riddle is a registered ISO 9000 consultant and has worked in over 30 countries over the past 22 years. Dr. Riddle has chaired the Working Group on Exporter Competitiveness of the Task Force on International Business Development under the government's International Trade Advisory Committee, and is the Director of Government Relations for the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Canada. She also serves on editorial boards of several professional journals on services.

Timothy Reid
President, Canadian Chamber of Commerce

As President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Tim Reid is the principal spokesperson and policy advocate for channelling the association's views and positions to the federal government, international organizations, the news media and the general public, and for directing the operations of the National Chamber. A member of the former APEC advisory committee, the Pacific Business Forum, Mr. Reid is the business co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Labour Market and Productivity Centre. He is a member of the International Trade Advisory Committee. A Rhodes Scholar, Mr. Reid holds degrees in Economics and Political Science from the Universities of Toronto, Yale and Oxford. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard, and served a three-year term as Principal Administrator with the OECD. Mr. Reid played professional football for the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1962.

Terry Hui
President and CEO, Concord Pacific Developments Corporation

Terry Hui holds a degree in Physics and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. As President and CEO of Concord Pacific Developments Corporation, Mr. Hui is responsible for strategic planning and overall development of the C$3 billion Concord Pacific Place development of the north shore of False Creek in downtown Vancouver. Mr. Hui is also President of Grand Adex Development, a major Vancouver-based residential development firm, and MultiActive Technologies, a group of companies engaged in developing and marketing interactive technologies. Holding a number of corporate directorships, including Husky Oil and Pacific Place Communications, Mr. Hui is active in a wide range of community organizations, including both the Advisory Council to the Faculty of Commerce of the University of British Columbia, and the Faculty of Business Administration of Simon Fraser University.
