Statement by the Prime Minister

March 7, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed deep regret today at the passing of the Right Honourable Michael Manley, former Prime Minister of Jamaica.

"To many Canadians, Michael Manley stood as the embodiment of Jamaica. An eloquent voice and a charismatic presence on the world stage, he articulated aspirations and goals for developing nations," said the Prime Minister, adding that "many leaders sought his counsel and appreciated his friendship and warmth at international gatherings." Mr. Manley was a friend of Canada. During the Second World War, he served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Mr. Manley became a member of Parliament in 1962, and served three terms as Prime Minister of Jamaica (from 1972 to 1976, 1976 to 1980 and 1989 to 1992).
