Prime Minister Announces Nova Scotia Judicial Appointment

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following appointment to the judiciary in Nova Scotia.

Mr. Justice Joseph Phillip Kennedy of Bridgewater, a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, is appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. He replaces Mr. Justice I.H.M. Palmeter who passed away.

Mr. Justice Kennedy graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1968 and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1969. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in April 1997, Mr. Justice Kennedy has been Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia since 1996 and was Associate Chief Judge of that Court from 1993 to 1996. Prior to being appointed a judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia in 1978, Mr. Justice Kennedy practised general law with the firm Kenney, Theakson, Kennedy & Allen, in Bridgewater.

This appointment is effective immediately.
