Prime Minister Announces Senior Reappointment April 22, 1999 Ottawa, Ontario Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the reappointment of Ward P.D. Elcock as Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, effective May 31, 1999. Mr. Elcock was first appointed as Director of the Service on May 31, 1994. He previously held the position of Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council (Security and Intelligence) and Counsel. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service was created by an Act of Parliament in 1984. The Act established a mandate for the Service and legislated a framework of democratic control and accountability for a civilian Canadian security intelligence service. The Service is dedicated to the protection of Canada's national security interests and the safety of Canadians.
