PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO THE NATIONAL ROUND TABLE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMY

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointments of Dr. David V.J. Bell, Alfred Pilon and Wendy L. Carter as members of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. These appointments are effective immediately.

The Round Table is an independent advisory body that provides decision makers, opinion leaders and the Canadian public with advice and recommendations on promoting sustainable development. It brings together distinguished Canadians from all sectors of society -- government, industry, labour, academia, environmental organizations and aboriginal groups -- dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development in Canada.

BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. David V.J. Bell, from Ontario, a political scientist by training, is currently a Professor in Environmental Studies at York     University and Director of the York Centre for Applied Sustainability, which he founded in 1996. A consultant and advisor to governments at the local, provincial and national levels in Canada, Dr. Bell is Chair of Parc-Downsview-Park; editor of the Sustainable Development Theme of the Encyclopedia of the Life Support Systems; a core faculty member of the Sustainable Enterprise Academy; a member of the Toronto Sustainability Round Table; and Co-Chair of Learning for a Sustainable Future. He was the writer and host of a series of 12 one hour radio broadcasts - "Sustainability: Canadian and Global Perspectives" - which have been broadcast in Canada and once internationally. Dr. Bell obtained a Bachelor of Arts from York University and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Dr. Bell is listed in Who's Who in Canada and Who's Who in Black Canada.

Alfred Pilon, from Quebec, a lawyer by training, is a member of the Bar of Quebec and has a Master in Business Administration (MBA). He is presently a manager and consultant analyst in the field of organizational development and he is serving as an arbitrator lawyer with the firm "Groupe Option Médiation". Mr. Pilon has over 25 years' experience in policy development, communications and negotiations. Previously, he served in the Quebec Premier's Office and as Chief of Staff with the Quebec National Assembly, Department of Finance and Treasury Board. Most recently, he managed the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. Director General for Quebec of the Council for Canadian Unity and Director of a community centre, the "Centre Multi Ethnique Saint-Louis", Mr. Pilon was a member of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, and sat on Boards of Directors and Coordinating Committees, such as United Way and "l'Office franco-québécois à la jeunesse". He was the founding President of the Complexe « G » Daycare Centre in Québec.

Wendy L. Carter, from British Columbia, is an seasoned executive with over 25 years' experience in both the public and private sectors. Her work is currently focussed on the voluntary sector and in supporting leaders in creating supportive and productive work environments. Ms. Carter has been involved with the Vancouver Board of Trade, Leadership Vancouver, Human Resources Management Association, Canadian Public Administration Society and was a founding member of Leave a Legacy BC. She is on the boards of the Family Services of the North Shore Foundation, Cedarview Family Lodge, Pasley Island Corporation, and the National Women's Retreat. Ms. Carter obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Political Science as well as a Bachelor of Laws, all from the University of British Columbia. She is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Canadian Bar Association.
