Prime Minister Jean Chrétien is pleased to announce that renowned Canadian broadcaster and journalist Pamela Wallin will be Canada’s next Consul General to New York City.

This appointment is effective immediately.

Pamela Wallin is one of Canada’s most accomplished, honoured and respected broadcasters and journalists.

Ms. Wallin’s storied career in journalism has included senior positions in print, radio and television. She has worked with the Ottawa bureau of the Toronto Star. She has been national political producer for CBC Radio’s As It Happens. She has co-hosted CTV’s Canada AM. In 1985, Ms. Wallin became the first woman in Canadian network television history to be appointed Ottawa Bureau Chief when CTV named her to that position. She also produced and hosted CTV’s weekly political forum Question Period and was a regular host of the weekend edition of CTV National News.

In 1998, Ms. Wallin published her best-selling memoir Since You Asked. In September 2001, she published Speaking of Success: Collected Wisdom, Insights and Reflections, a collection of the perspectives of the many celebrated people she has interviewed over the years.

Ms. Wallin is also currently Chair of the Canadian Journalism Foundation. She is a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo. She is also member of the Ontario Cancer Research Network

Ms. Wallin has received 6 Honourary Doctorates, the most recent being from her alma mater the University of Regina earlier this year. In 1999, she received the United Nations UNIFEM Canada Award and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. In 1997, she received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Women in Film and Television. In 1994, she received Radio and Television News Directors’ Association President’s Broadcaster of the Year Award.
