PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES Ottawa, Ontario Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, today announced the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli as the new Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, effective September 2, 2000. Mr. Zaccardelli succeeds Commissioner Philip Murray who will retire from the position on September 1, 2000. Deputy Commissioner Zaccardelli is a 30 year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He joined the Force in September 1970, and has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility since that time, including Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations in New Brunswick and then in Quebec; Commanding Officer of RCMP Operations in Ontario; and Deputy Commissioner, National Headquarters. He assumed his current position in August 1999. Deputy Commissioner Zaccardelli obtained a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Administration from Loyola College in Montreal. The Prime Minister took this opportunity to thank Commissioner Murray for his dedication and service over the years as Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and to wish him a rewarding retirement. - 30 - Biographical notes attached.
