Statement by the Prime Minister

April 12, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement today on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope:

"It was twenty years ago today that Terry Fox stood at the Atlantic Ocean and began a journey that would inspire a nation. It is a great honour for me to pay tribute to the unyielding spirit and the living legacy of Terry Fox that has found a permanent home in the hearts of Canadians.

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope touched Canadians across our vast country and raised our awareness of the need for more cancer research. Over the last twenty years, Terry Fox’s commitment and spirit has spread beyond Canada and sparked runs in countries across the world.

Over the course of his short life, Terry Fox became one of our most beloved Canadian heroes. With the help of all those who take part every year in the Marathon of Hope, his legacy will continue to inspire us all for many, many years to come."
