While economic development offers Canadians definite advantages, it poses undeniable problems for the environment. During the last half-century, Canada has seen its population more than double and its output escalate almost sevenfold. As a result, Canadians are drawing ever more heavily on the environment for resources and energy and are releasing increasing quantities of waste into it.
