By pipeline
Though its only passengers are oil and natural gas, Canadian pipelines
form a critical part of the country's transportation network. A sophisticated
network of over 100,000 kilometres of pipeline transports nearly two-thirds
of our total energy supply and more than 95% of the crude oil and natural
gas produced in Canada. These pipelines make it possible for western natural
gas to heat homes and fuel major industries in Ontario and Quebec. In
fact, natural gas is used to heat more than half of Canada's homes. The
production of the Sable Island natural gas fields, located 250 kilometres
off the Nova Scotia coast, has increased the demand for pipeline capacity
in the region. As a result, a pipeline has been constructed to deliver
this gas to markets in the Maritimes and in the northeastern United States.
