Canada's justice system is entrusted to mete out sentences that are "... proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the degree of responsibility of the offender." Judges throughout Canada have a wide range of options when sentencing those convicted of crimes. From fines, probation or imprisonment to alternative measures such as community service or counselling, determining a sentence is one of the most complex and challenging decisions a judge must make.
