Sentencing
Canada's justice system is entrusted to mete out sentences that are "... proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the degree of responsibility of the offender." Judges throughout Canada have a wide range of options when sentencing those convicted of crimes. From fines, probation or imprisonment to alternative measures such as community service or counselling, determining a sentence is one of the most complex and challenging decisions a judge must make.
