Type of dwelling and population by type of dwelling (1961-2001 Censuses)


Definitions

Private dwelling: Refers to a separate set of living quarters with a private entrance either from outside or from a hallway or other common area inside the building.

An occupied private dwelling is occupied by usual residents as opposed to foreign or temporary residents. The category for owner-occupied private dwellings does not include dwellings situated on farms. Owner-occupied dwellings could be situated on rented or leased land or be part of a condominium.

Collective dwelling: Refers to a dwelling of a commercial, institutional or communal nature, such as a rooming house, hotel, motel, tourist home, nursing home, hospital, staff residence, military camp, jail, mission, group home, and so on.
