Annex L-5

United States Department of Agriculture Inspection Requirements for Meat Products

The applicant notifies the operator of the import inspection facility receiving a fax of the form 9540-1.

Then the truck driver proceeds to the border with the required documents. The required documents are the 9540-1 and the original certificate signed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Then the carrier arrives at the import inspection facility indicated on the form 9540-1. The Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector is to be met with the original certificate and the 9540-1 that are to be provided.

If the shipment does not arrive at the import inspection facility within the expected time, the operator of the import inspection facility notifies the exporter immediately. The carrier can then be contacted for appropriate action.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector issues an assignment, either the lot is free from inspection, a skip lot, or it is inspected.

If the lot is free from inspection, the form 9540-1 is stamped with the words "United States inspected and passed" by the Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector and the form is given back to the carrier. Then the shipment can proceed to its final destination.

If the lot is inspected and passes, the form 9540-1 is stamped with the words "United States inspected and passed" by the Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector and the form is given back to the carrier. Then the shipment can proceed to its final destination.

If the lot is inspected and fails, the form 9540-1 and the certificate are stamped "United States Refused Entry". The shipment is detained pending final disposition. It can be destroyed, converted to pet food or returned to Canada after a permission given by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
