Flowchart - Registration Requirements

This flow chart indicates the registration requirements for broad product groupings regulated under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations and the relevant section of the Guide to the Canadian Federal Regulatory Requirements for Fertilizers and Supplements applicable to the product type.

Products containing only Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid, and/or Soluble Potash; only Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid, and/or Soluble Potash and Calcium, Magnesium, and/or Sulphur; or only Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid, and/or Soluble Potash and Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphur, Boron, Chloride, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, and/or Zinc, and that:

have more than one ingredient;
are for farm use;
are not customer formula;
have chemical ingredients; and
have greater than or equal to 24% combined Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid and /or Soluble Potash,

are exempt from registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

have more than one ingredient;
are for farm use;
are not customer formula;
have chemical ingredients; and
have less than 24% combined Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid and /or Soluble Potash,

require registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

have more than one ingredient;
are for farm use;
are not customer formula;
have 50% organic ingredients and at least 25% water insoluble nitrogen; and
have less than 18% combined Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphoric Acid and /or Soluble Potash,

have more than one ingredient;
are for farm use;
are not customer formula;
have 50% organic ingredients and at least 25% water insoluble nitrogen; and

Products containing only Boron, Chloride, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, and/or Zinc, require registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

Products with nutrient and pesticide guarantees, and that are customer-formula, are exempt from registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

Products containing non-living ingredients that have label claims for improving plant growth, crop yield, or the physical condition of the soil not associated with a recognized plant nutrient, and/or a non-nutrient guarantee(s) and that is:

listed in Schedule II of the Fertilizers Regulations;
sold to adjust soil pH only;
composed of fibrous organic material only; or
a potting soil containing a registered supplement,

are exempt from registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.

Products, or products containing, micro-organisms for aiding plant growth or crop yield and that are applied to seeds, soil or plants, other than rhizobia that have been applied to alfalfa, clover, birdsfoot trefoil, bean, pea, or soybean seeds prior to sale, require registration under the Fertilizers Act and Regulations. The section of the Guide relevant to this product type is under development.
