I Want a Dog

I Want a Dog May, the name of her character, was inspired by May Cutler, founder of Canada's Tundra Books: "[...] I had a few honours in my life, but I think the one I shall always be proudest of is that she named the spunky, irrepressible heroine of so many of her books 'May', after me."
