Celebrating Dayal Kaur Khalsa

Cowboy Dreams

Cowboy Dreams This is perhaps the most sophisticated book Khalsa ever published. Each illustration has a theme. The transformation of a basement into a desert plain invites us to dive with May into her universe and to follow the warm trail of the great plains. The wide-open space, the vastness of the sky and May's presence on her wooden horse are marvelous accompaniments to the melancholic song of the poor cowboy. Published posthumously.

Cowboy Dreams. Text and illustrations. Montreal: Tundra Books, 1990.

Cowboy Dreams I'm a poor, lonesome cowboy,
I'm a poor, lonesome cowboy,
I'm a poor, lonesome cowboy,
And a long ways from home.
