Celebrating Dayal Kaur Khalsa

SAVOIR FAIRE

In Appreciation

On this Tuesday, July 20, 1999, it gives me great pleasure to be with you to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the beloved Dayal Kaur Khalsa, which occurred this past Saturday, July 17, 1999.

In remembering some of the relationships she cherished, I hope to help rekindle the memory of her creativity, her dynamism and her sense of humor. The charismatic demeanor she presented to the world in no way overshadows her shy, vulnerable inner quality of childlike curiosity which also should be remembered.

This exhibition at the National Library of Canada gives us a glimpse into the mind and spirit of a true creator of books for children.

For those of you who will want a copy of this talk, it will be published in a volume entitled Canadian Children's Literature: An Assessment, which is currently scheduled for publication in 2000. This volume will include all of the papers, such as this one, that were delivered at the Symposium on Canadian Children's Literature at the University of Ottawa on May 7 and 8, 1999.
