Enlarging our Minds

Alexander Graham Bell, ca. 1914-1919, by the Moffet Studio

Try to imagine a world without telephones, stereos or lasers.

Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention for the transmission of speech over wires in 1876. The following year, he founded the Bell Telephone Company. He went on to invent prototypes of many other inventions in common use today, and perfected the gramophone. In 1909, his plane, the Silver Dart, made the first piloted flight in Canada.

Born in Scotland, Bell (1847-1922) immigrated to Canada in 1870, and then moved to Boston to teach deaf children. He died in Baddeck, Nova Scotia.
