Self-portrait, 1907, by Sidney Carter

Completely unknown today, Carter (1880-1956) was one of the earliest and certainly most talented of the influential band of amateur photographers at the turn of the century who strove to have photography recognized as an art form in Canada.

Though he created unique images of the great and good himself, such as Rudyard Kipling and Pauline (Archer) Vanier, his own name has been unfairly lost to history.
