Norman McLaren,
ca. 1950, by Alma Duncan
Born in Scotland,
Norman McLaren (1914-1987) came to Canada in 1941 to work for John Grierson at the
National Film Board (NFB). At the NFB, his innovative and intelligent exploration of the
medium of film, and his unique outlook on humanity, made him internationally famous as a
filmmaker and director, especially in animation.
This portrait by a
fellow filmmaker and artist attempts to capture the genius of this brilliant man.
