Buffy
Sainte-Marie, ca. 1989, by Barbara Woodley
The charismatic
folksinger, songwriter and political activist Buffy Sainte-Marie (born 1941) has spent
countless hours in theatre dressing rooms.
She first rose to
international fame on the New York music scene in the 1960s. Through her concerts and
songs, including such hits as Universal Soldier and Up Where We Belong',
Sainte-Marie sees herself as building a "bridge between Native cultures and the rest
of the world."
