Louis-Hippolyte
Lafontaine, ca. 1837-1838, by Jean-Joseph Girouard (1794-1855)
A fellow prisoner
drew this portrait of Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine (1807-1864) while they were imprisoned
during the Rebellion of 1837-1838.
Lafontaine defended
the rights of French-Canadians but suffered the consequences. He recovered his freedom,
and was still able to command the respect of his contemporaries by finding a middle way to
build and shape the Canadian experience for the benefit of all. Lafontaine became the
first prime minister of the United Canadas.
