The Earl and Countess of Elgin, Lady Alice Lambton (left) and Lord Mark Kerr (standing), 1847, photograph attributed to Thomas Coffin Doane (1814-1896)

An advocate of responsible government, Lord Elgin (1811-1863) served as governor general of Canada from 1847 to 1854, during a stormy but significant period in Canadian history.

He is shown here dressed in academic robes to preside over Commencement at Upper Canada College in his official capacity as Chancellor of the University of Toronto, October 20, 1847.
