John Davis: Master Navigator

The ships Davis would have used for his voyages were mainly carracks, sailing ships that were built in different sizes. Mooneshine was 35 tons, Sunneshine was 50 tons, and Mermayde was 120 tons. North Starre and Ellen were an even smaller kind of ship called a pinnace. It was crowded on these small ships, and many men got ill and died on long voyages.
