Introduction

Roald Amundsen
Born 1872, died 1928

Roald Amundsen was one of the most important men in the history of polar exploration. He was one of the first men to spend a winter in the Antarctic; he was the first to sail through the Northwest Passage; he was the first to reach the South Pole; and he was the first to fly over the North Pole. In addition, the measurements and notes he took on these voyages were useful to scientists for many years.
