In January 1960, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen and composer Phil Nimmons established the Advanced School of Contemporary Music (ACSM) in Toronto. During the two years that he operated the school, several Canadian pianists, including Brian Browne, Wray Downes and Bill King, studied with him.
However, Oscar's performance schedule was too heavy for him to continue teaching during this period. 8 Other educational ventures of importance were his presence at the inception of the Jazz Workshop at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 1974 and his work as an adjunct professor of music at York University in the mid-1980s. On September 13, 1991, he was installed at York as its eighth Chancellor. Footnote8 Jazz pianist: Standard of excellence is a guide to others. Ottawa Citizen, January 23, 1971.
