Alice Walker (1881-1890) was born June 28, 1881, coinciding with the start of Horatio Walker's blossoming career. She was the only daughter of the internationally-renowned artist. It is assumed that her father painted miniatures as well as over-painting photographs as an apprentice with Toronto's Notman and Fraser studio. This is the only known miniature by him and may be a memento mori of Alice, who died at the age of nine from diphtheria.
